Heisman Trophy Players Preview & Pick

Read on for our player by player preview and pick for winner of the Heisman Trophy.

Spencer Rattler

Spencer Rattler has been a very successful quarterback in his young career, and he is expected to take a massive leap in 2021.

[su_panel color=”#00000″ border=”2px solid #00329A”]Last season, Rattler threw for 2,784 yards and 25 touchdowns while being the focal point of a successful Sooners season.[/su_panel]

They also picked up a huge 55-20 victory over Florida when they were competing in the Cotton Bowl.

Rattler has a tremendous opportunity to become the new face of college football now that other big quarterbacks left for the NFL such as Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields and Mac Jones.

Oklahoma themselves could be the team to beat in 2021, as they are getting back tons of top recruits this year to help Rattler create a strong team success case.

D.J. Uiagalele

This is a bit of an interesting one.

There’s been multiple offshore betting sites that have listed D.J. Uiagalele as a potential Heisman winner when the season comes to a close.

Uiagalele is only in his second year with the school and has played in just two games while Lawrence was forced to sit out due to COVID-19.

Uiagalele is also going to have a number of talented receivers to throw the football too in order to help him out.

Frank Ladson Jr. and Joe Ngata are both on the roster and were each top-19 wideouts in the 2019 recruiting class. E.J. Williams was the 13^th ranked wideout in the 2020 class but has flashes of superstardom.

Clemson is definitely in goods hands for the future.

Bryce Young

It seems like this happens every season now, but the next Alabama quarterback could end up making a run at the Heisman award.

Bryce Young is going to be filling in for Mac Jones after he was selected to the New England Patriots in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Tua Tagovailoa was the quarterback before Jones to play for Alabama and Jalen Hurts was before him. All of those guys have made it onto NFL teams since then, which could make Young in a perfect situation to learn and develop like them.

Young came into Alabama as a freshman and five-star recruit while delivering a beautiful ball in garbage time during one game in particular.

Given how successful Alabama has been in the talent development department in the past couple of years alone, Young has a terrific shot to win this award.

Sam Howell

North Carolina has never once had a Heisman winner on their roster.

However, this could finally be the year with Sam Howell being one of the hottest betting odds for the Heisman award ahead of the 2021 season.

Howell ended last season on a high note, capping off his 3,586 passing yard season with a three-touchdown performance in the Orange Bowl against Texas A&M.

Those three touchdowns gave him a total of 30 on the year compared to just seven interceptions.

He has 68 touchdown passes in his first two years now, the most by any player in the ACC. For comparison, Lawrence only totaled 66 in his first two seasons.

Howell seems to be doing it all for North Carolina and his improvement from year to year seems to have caught some eyes.

Coming off a season when he set career highs in passer rating with 179.1, yards per attempt with 10.3 and completion percentage with 68.1, I think it is safe to say that Howell could position himself for the Heisman with another year like that.

Kedon Slovis

Kedon Slovis is an interesting prospect for the Heisman this season.

He burst onto the scenes in 2019 with a stellar season but regressed in 2020, finishing with just 1,921 passing yards and 17 touchdown passes.

He did hold a 67 percent completion percentage throughout the season and led the conference in completions and passing yards per game. Slovis was then awarded with All-Pac-12 honors by the conference at the end of the year.

It should also be noted that Slovis used to get some work in with another legendary quarterback in Kurt Warner.

This is likely what led to his incredible 2020 run which saw him put up 3,505 passing yards, 30 touchdowns and a 72 percent completion rate.

That rate by the way was the highest in NCAA history for any freshman quarterback.

Slovis will need to find a way to combine the positives from both his 2019 and 2020 season to position himself as the early Heisman favorite.

D’Eriq King

Another interesting choice for the Heisman award. D’Eriq King is currently working himself back onto the field after suffering an ACL injury in 2020.

However, that hasn’t stopped sportsbooks from assuming he will be back and better than ever.

Before his devastating injury, King started in 11 games for the Miami Hurricanes.

He threw for 2,686 yards and 23 touchdowns compared to just five interceptions. Not to mention he put up 538 rushing yards and four touchdowns on top of that.

Some had assumed that King would end up declaring for the NFL draft, but he ended up announcing he would return for another year right before the start of the Cheez-It Bowl.

King has not only been a great leader for a Miami team that desperately needed it, but he is also incredible in both the run and passing game.

He picked up 293 rushing yards as just a scrambler out of the pocket, ranking him seventh in the country in that category. Nowadays people are looking for the flashy and elusive quarterback that just brings a spark wherever he ends up.

King could definitely be in that conversation if he is able to get situated at training camp like everybody expects right now.

Tyler Shough

We have a bit of a dark horse candidate in Tyler Shough.

Shough was surprisingly ranked pretty highly in terms of online sportsbooks odds for this award.

The former four-star recruit was able to make it through his sophomore season with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 106 out of his 167 passes on the year.

Shough took the Ducks to a fast 3-0 start and was showing real potential to be the face of the college football scene but eventually fell flat in games against Oregon State and California to set them back down to Earth a little bit.

For Shough to win this award, a ton of things would have to go his way.

[su_panel color=”#00000″ border=”2px solid #00329A”]He would need to put up some insane stat lines, he would have to have what some analysts call “a Heisman moment”, and he will likely have to take the Ducks to an undefeated record.[/su_panel]

It seems like teams from the Pac-12 rarely end up winning the Heisman so Shough will have some work to do to break that narrative.

Kyren Williams

Here we have the first official running back to make it onto this list.

Kyren Williams was one of the few biggest breakouts stars in 2020.

He first came into the college football scene in 2019, when he picked up a measly 29 yards from scrimmage throughout the year.

Then, everything ended up changing for him.

He went for 1,438 yards from scrimmage and scored 14 touchdowns for Notre Dame in 2020, taking them all the way to the College Football Playoffs.

The roster is a little worse than it was last season but if Williams can continue to do what he has been doing then he may very well win this award.

JT Daniels

This is one guy that a lot of people probably forget about.

Daniels was forced to miss the entire 2019 college football season due to a torn ACL while he was with USC.

He didn’t step foot back onto the football field against until the end of November in 2020 when he finally recovered from that horrific injury.

Though this time he was a member of the Georgia Bulldogs.

To make that even more shocking, Daniels put up those numbers against a Mississippi State secondary that hadn’t let up 400 plus passing yards in five years.

Daniels is in a perfect position to let the rock fly this upcoming season with his defense being thinned out due to the NFL draft along with transfers.

[su_panel color=”#00000″ border=”2px solid #00329A”]We should be able to see exciting performances out of him often this year, as he also threw for 392 yards in the Peach Bowl when he played Cincinnati, who is another strong defensive minded football team.[/su_panel]

Breece Hall

One of the most electric young running backs in today’s game.

Breece Hall was able to stake his name in the top ten for the Heisman finalists during the 2020 season and happens to be the only player returning in 2021.

The Iowa State back averaged 131 rushing yards per game during 2020, along with two touchdowns per game.

Those are some outrageous stats for a running back and numbers that we don’t get to see all too often.

The fact that Iowa State is in a perfect position to compete this year is fantastic news for Hall, as team success does in fact play a big part in winning the Heisman award.

The school went 9-3 in 2020 and is bringing back every single offensive starter with Hall being the centerpiece.

They are also in the top ten, maybe even top five, in the early season rankings. This may seem casual, but they haven’t opened a season higher than 20^th in history.

Hall might be able to make history and pick up the second Heisman in a row that wasn’t awarded to a quarterback.

John Metchie III

What are the odds we see another non quarterback win the Heisman this year?

Pretty low if I am being completely transparent with you.

However, what do you think the odds are that an Alabama wide receiver wins the award for a second straight season?

Well, admittedly the odds are also atrocious. Although John Metchie could possibly make this farfetched dream a reality by the end of the year.

He finished 2020 with 55 receptions for 916 yards and six total touchdowns.

He has great chemistry with their new quarterback Bryce Young and is probably the only solidified wideout on their offense after DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle and Najee Harris all left for the NFL Draft.

He wasn’t the best known in college football but could make a very big name for himself now that he is going to be right under the spotlight.

Matt Corral

Matt Corral has a pretty low chance at taking home the Heisman year, but it isn’t impossible.

Corral displays a lot of incredible abilities on the field but consistently turns the football over. In 2020 alone, he lost three fumbles and threw 14 interceptions in just a ten-game season.

The talent is certainly there, the only issue would be cutting down the turnovers. Not just by a few either, but by half the amount or three fourths of it.

Final Heisman Pick

Joe Burrow and DeVonta Smith were heavy underdogs throughout the season and yet it didn’t deter them.
