Sweet 16 betting Preview and Picks
See our experts top picks for this weekend's Sweet 16 betting round.Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. Arkansas Razorbacks
With Gonzaga easily being the favorite to win the NCAA championship, their game against Arkansas is going to be watched very closely. First things first, Gonzaga has the best frontcourt remaining in the tournament with Drew Timme and Chet Holmgren.
I’m not sure if you heard, but Holmgren put together one of the greatest stat lines in tournament history in the opening round of action.
Despite just being a freshman, he is projected to be a top three overall draft pick in a few months.
As for Timme, he chose to stick around and play another year. He was projected to be at the top of the class last year and is going to be up there again. He has the experience and leadership qualities to dig them out of tough situations.
To make matters worse for Arkansas, they have been incredibly bad against teams that average 50 percent shooting from the field.
Arkansas is one of the best free throw shooting squads in the nation and they always seem to capitalize on any opportunity that comes their way. However, Gonzaga just seems to be a far more talented and put together team.
Arkansas doesn’t shoot the three-ball well either, which means if they aren’t able to get to the foul line consistently, they are in for a rough day.
Gonzaga is particularly strong at not getting into foul trouble, which means that Arkansas could be out of options quickly.
I really like what both of these teams have been able to do so far, but it’s very hard to imagine that Gonzaga gets knocked out right now.
Pick: Gonzaga Bulldogs
Duke Blue Devils vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders
Duke has become one of the most watchable teams throughout this entire tournament. Not because they are the clear-cut best team in the game, but because this is going to be coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final run.
The legendary college coach has the Blue Devils in perfect form right now.
They have a couple of players that are expected to be taken in the lottery of the upcoming NBA Draft, and don’t really have any weaknesses offensively.
Plus, they are getting A.J. Griffin back from an ankle injury to make themselves even stronger.
The only way that Texas Tech really has a chance to upset them is with hard-nosed defense.
Luckily, that happens to be their thing. The Red Raiders have the best defense in the country right now and we saw that on display after they knocked off Baylor, Tennessee and Kansas.
If they can avoid giving the ball away too much, they could genuinely knock off Duke.
I am actually going to lean towards them to upset the Blue Devils as improbably as it may seem. If this tournament has taught us anything, it's that even the perfect squads can lose at any given time.
Pick: Texas Tech Red Raiders
Arizona Wildcats vs. Houston Cougars
These two teams probably can’t get any more different in the way that they approach the game.
When you look at Arizona, they love playing at a high tempo. They fly around the court and like to get a ton of shots up per game.
On top of that, they are incredibly good when playing at this pace, ranking first in the country when it comes to assist rate and offensive efficiency.
The only real flaw that we have seen so far is their lack of consistent three-point shooting.
Other than that, Bennedict Mathurin and company have looked as sharp as ever.
As for the Houston Cougars now, they play with the slowest tempo around. Ranking 324th in that category when it comes to the nation.
Houston has put together a few strong performances to get to this point, and while they are underdogs in the matchup, we should see a strong defensive approach from them.
Even though Arizona looks like the stronger team on paper, the winner of this game will likely be the one that dictates the pace.
In my opinion, I believe that the Wildcats will turn this game up a notch at some point and force Houston to play out of their comfort zone, leaving them as the winner.
Pick: Arizona Wildcats
Purdue Boilermakers vs. Saint Peter’s Peacocks
Well, it doesn’t get more interesting than this. The Purdue Boilermakers are a ridiculously talented offensive team.
As you might expect, their defense is severely lacking because of that.
There are few teams out there that can hold themselves to such a high standard on both ends. In Purdue’s case, they prefer to win games by outscoring their opponent rather than locking them down and slowing the tempo.
This team ranks number two in the nation in terms of offensive efficiency and has a few great players to run the offense like Jaden Ivey.
If their defense wasn’t so poor, they would be heavy favorites to make it into the Final Four.
Their opponent here has caught a few teams' way off guard already though, and they don’t look like they want to stop just yet.
Saint Peter’s just became the first ever number 15 seed in the tournament to make it into the Sweet 16 round.
Their offense hasn’t really been that great, but they play intimidating defense that opponents don’t expect.
They don’t back down to stronger competition and instead rise up to their level of play. This Cinderella story may not be over just yet, as they could keep up with Purdue.
All they need to do is keep their turnovers numbers low against a below average Purdue defense while slowing them down offensively with their strong play on the other end.
If there was ever a time to strongly consider taking a heavy underdog, the Peacocks are the team to do so.
However, if I were to be betting on this game, I would choose the Boilermakers.
Like I mentioned earlier, they are the only 15 seed to ever make it this far in the tournament. Anything can happen, but the odds aren’t too great at them making it into the Elite Eight.
Pick: Purdue Boilermakers
