SUPER BOWL 56 – SOFI Stadium – Inglewood, CA – NFL – Sunday, February 13th
The Super Bowl is finally upon us and we are in for a great one.
Let’s dive into each of these teams separately before I share my thoughts on how this game is going to be played out. Starting off with the Bengals.
Cincinnati Bengals
This team has a chance to win purely off of their quarterback, Joe Burrow.
Burrow was the number one overall pick back in 2019 and has since been unbelievable when throwing the football.
He has been holding up incredibly well despite a pretty shaky offensive line that allowed nine sacks in that Divisional Round game against the Tennessee Titans.
Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd also form a phenomenal trio in the pass game, which makes it difficult for teams to completely take away one of them.
If you want another stat on how good Burrow has been this year, he has completed seven of 12 passes when under pressure and three long third downs were converted due to him breaking a tackle in the backfield and scrambling.
The problem for this Cincinnati team is their slow starts. In that last game against the Kansas City Chiefs, they were quickly down 21-3.
Patrick Mahomes had completed all 11 of his attempts for 127 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. In the second, he missed seven of his first eight throws and was limited to just three points that got scored on the final play of regulation.
Cincinnati has had some great moments but they were still ranked 24th in the league in opposing quarterback rating allowed per game this season.
Matthew Stafford is a pretty intelligent quarterback; he may pick apart this secondary.
Luckily, Cincinnati is riding a wave that isn’t shown on the stat sheet. Burrow and this team weren’t even expected to make it into the playoffs at the start of the season.
After all, they were last place in the division just a year ago. Somehow, they became division winners and used their momentum to take out the Las Vegas Raiders.
They then took down the number one seeded Tennessee Titans and most recently knocked off the number two seeded Chiefs.
There isn’t a player on this roster that lacks confidence that they will win this game, which gives them a tremendous edge moving forward and a type of swagger that isn’t matched.
LA Rams
As for the Los Angeles Rams, what more can we say about this offense?
Stafford is not only a veteran quarterback with a lot of knowledge, but he is also known for creating big fourth quarter comeback drives.
He will never be officially ruled out of a game regardless of the score. Plus, he has quite a bit of talent surrounding him.
Cooper Kupp has scored a touchdown in every single postseason game this year and just recently almost broke the 200-yard mark when defeating the San Francisco 49ers.
He also gets help from Odell Beckham, who has gotten better in each game that he has played with the Rams after leaving the Cleveland Browns at the mid-way point in the year. Both players mentioned are good for the first touchdown scorer pick.
Looking at the backfield, Cam Akers and Sony Michel are a strong duo. However, they admittedly haven’t done much of anything on the ground the last two weeks.
Los Angeles should want to keep a balanced effort here to win this game, meaning the run game has to get going at some point.
Honestly, one of the few negatives that this team has is its coaching. Sean McVay is a stellar head coach, but sometimes he completely overthinks his opponents.
We have seen it a couple of times throughout his stint with the Rams. It was even notable in his last game against the 49ers, as he randomly blew two of his timeouts on challenges that a lot of people felt weren’t even worth challenging in the first place.
He also admitted to not adjusting his game plan when the Rams lost the Super Bowl to the New England Patriots a couple of years ago.
Still though, McVay has proven to get out of his own head, he just has to do that in this game. Luckily, they have a ridiculous defense to rally behind.
Looking at the defensive line, they have Von Miller and Aaron Donald rushing the passer.
Even if you find a way to double team one of them, the other gets a one-on-one drive to the quarterback which almost always results in a sack or fumble if the ball isn’t out of your hands fast.
Passing the ball quick hasn’t worked well against them either, because Jalen Ramsey completely locks down one side of the field on most occasions.
Eric Weddle was just brought out of retirement as well and already led the team with nine tackles in the NFC Championship game. They just have an unbelievable amount of talent on their roster.
Both teams are more than deserving of winning a Super Bowl ring.
The Rams are a far more talented team on paper with a lot of star power, but momentum and swagger can’t be weighed out on a scale.
Cincinnati knows they are a scary team right now and are playing with confidence that should scare anybody. Beating the Chiefs at all is a big accomplishment, yet they beat them twice in one season.
Los Angeles is going to be the early favorite considering they are at home with that much more experience and talent.
However, I am going to pick the Bengals here.
I believe that they are loving that leadership that Burrow brings to the table and when you get on this type of a roll, sometimes it is impossible to slow you down.
The only thing standing in their way is if they can figure out a good game plan for Kupp, but we saw them completely take away Tyreek Hill in the second half of that Chiefs game so anything is possible.
