NFL MVP Contenders 2021/2022 – Top Picks

Aaron Rodgers

2021/22 Most Valuable Player NFL Aaron Rodgers

The current leading candidate for the MVP award in the NFL is Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers was able to win the award last season after a phenomenal year, and this year hasn’t been any different.

The odds have him listed as a narrow favorite, but many suggest that he has already won the award. After all, he received about two-thirds of the votes for the First Team All-Pro squad.

In games that the started and finished for the Green Bay Packers this year, he had a 13-2 record.

Plus, the one game this season that he wasn’t able to play in was a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. In that game, the team only scored seven points, further proving how valuable Rodgers is to this offense.

When you look at the stats, they also favor Rodgers. He had 4,115 yards, 37 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He had a league leading 111.9 passer rating.

While those numbers are a little bit lower than last year's totals, he was arguably the best and most efficient passer of the year.

However, he had an entire situation with his vaccination status that had some reporters come out and say that voters weren’t planning to vote for him because of his vaccination status.

Another voter openly said that he though Rodgers was a horrible person and wasn’t going to vote for him because of that.

It also doesn’t help that the Packers just got knocked out in the first round of the playoffs in a 13-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Still, Rodgers is more than deserving of the award.

Tom Brady

Odds for What NFL Team Tom Brady Will Play For in 2020

Right behind him is Tom Brady. Brady wasn’t as efficient, but the numbers were even better than what Rodgers posted.

Throughout the season, Brady was able to lead the league with 485 completions, 5,316 passing yards and 43 touchdowns.

He had thrown 12 interceptions on the year but those numbers are wildly difficult to beat. The only real issues hurting Brady in this race is that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers schedule wasn’t that difficult.

On top of that, the New Orleans Saints dominated him and the team twice this season, including a 9-0 shutout against them.

Voters may also feel like Brady is up there far too often and could just be pushed away from voting for him because he is always up there.

We are yet to see what the Buccaneers have done in the postseason, but an early playoff exit may seal it for Brady.

Cooper Kupp

Cooper Kupp deserves a fair shot at winning this award. In my opinion, he should be the favorite this year.

The only issue is that he isn’t a quarterback, which is something that shouldn’t be factored in when deciding this award.

A player from any position should be considered the same amount. Still, Kupp was breaking records left and right and ended with the receiving triple crown.

He had 145 receptions this season, just a couple away from breaking Michael Thomas’s reception record. Then he turned those catches into 1,947 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns.

Throughout the entire regular season, he averaged over 100 yards per game and I believe his lowest yardage total was 91 yards.

On top of all that, Kupp led the league in targets, first down receptions and touchdowns.

Kupp was the best wideout in the league this year by a long shot, and had the third best catch percentage of all players with over 100 targets.

There wasn’t anybody at the position who performed better than he did and he should be heavily considered for the award given his team's success as well.

Joe Burrow

Joe Burrow has also found a way to skyrocket all the way up the MVP conversation towards the back end of the season.

One year removed from tearing his ACL in a losing season for the Cincinnati Bengals, he has taken this team to new heights.

The Bengals are now the AFC North champions. They have also won their first playoff game in 31 years as well as their first road playoff win in their franchise's history. They are about to play in an AFC Championship game because of Burrow’s swagger and calmness in the pocket.

That has helped him throw for 4,611 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, a 108.3 passer rating and only 14 interceptions.

He is ahead of both Brady and Rodgers in yards per pass attempt and completion percentage as well.

He has thrown for an average of 8.9 yards per pass attempt and completed 70.4 percent of his passes.

Burrow may now win the award this season because both Rodgers and Brady looked more impressive, but anything is possible if the Bengals can keep this train rolling in the postseason.

Jonathan Taylor

Jonathan Taylor is the last longshot for the award. Taylor was firmly positioned in the top four candidates for the award before the Indianapolis Colts completely collapsed in Week 18.

After starting the season 1-4, the Colts marched their way to a solid record and were a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars away from stamping their ticket to the postseason.

Unfortunately, their team fell apart and the Jaguars dominated them from start to finish, knocking them out of contention and helping Taylor plummet out of the conversation.

Still, he should be considered for his stats alone. He led the league with 1,811 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.

He also hauled in a few receiving touchdowns to round it all out. He even had a five-touchdown performance against the Buffalo Bills that made him look even stronger in this race.

The only problem is that he plays the running back position and is fighting for an award that gets primarily handed to quarterbacks.

Also, if Derrick Henry was able to rush for over 2,000 yards last season and still wasn’t able to win the MVP, then Taylor is almost certainly not going to come away with it.

As I said before though, all players should be considered the same for this MVP award, and it shouldn’t be known as the quarterback award.
