Why Bet on Brooklyn?

The Nets stole Game 1, 111-102. The sixth-seeded Nets took a 17-point lead in the second quarter and never trailed again. The Sixers cut the Brooklyn lead to two points with a burst right out of halftime, but the Nets responded to take an 11-point lead going into the fourth quarter and extended that to 16 points, going up 104-88 with 6:20 to go and keeping the Sixers at a distance down the stretch.

Ed Davis came off the bench and double-doubled on Saturday, scoring 12 points (5-of-7 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs) with 16 rebounds and two assists in 25 minutes. Davis played excellent in place of Jarrett Allen, who got into early foul trouble and played just 10 minutes. Davis was active on the glass as per usual and also impact the game on the defensive end. He was a team-best +28.

Caris LeVert was also great off the bench in the win with 23 points on 8-of-18 shooting (4-of-4 FTs) with four rebounds, two assists, one steal, one block and three 3-pointers in 23 minutes. He was one of four players to see 20 or more minutes off the bench in the win.

D’Angelo Russell led the Nets with 26 points (10-of-25 FGs, 4-of-5 FTs), adding three rebounds, four assists, one steal, and two 3-pointers in 29 minutes. It was the first playoff game of Russell’s career. Spencer Dinwiddie scored 18 points (6-of-14 FGs, 4-of-5 FTs), adding three rebounds, one assist, and two 3-pointers in 32 minutes.

In a series where the Sixers hold a distinct individual talent advantage, the Nets are glaringly better in one area — the bench. It was on display Saturday. However, Davis (ankle) and Jared Dudley (calf) are being listed as questionable for Monday’s Game 2 against the 76ers.

Why Bet on Philadelphia?

Joel Embiid (left knee soreness) struggled in Game 1 against the Nets, scoring 22 points (5-of-15 FGs, 12-of-18 FTs) with 15 rebounds, four assists, five blocks and three turnovers in 24 minutes. Embiid was a game-time decision on Saturday, with the official call coming on his status just minutes before tip-off. He was wearing a brace on his knee and was clearly hobbled in his limited playing time.

Embiid is clearly not 100 percent. He started the game punishing the Nets inside — Jarrett Allen was called for two fouls in the first minute — but then drifted to the outside, going 0-for-5 from 3, and admitted that he was purposefully looking to shoot more jumpers to save wear and tear on his body.

“I love Jo for going out there and competing,” Jimmy Butler said. “Don’t get me wrong, the game is definitely different when he’s out there — he’s a force to be reckoned with, we all know that. We all want him to be smart. I think that we’re capable of winning [without him]. I think it’s a lot easier when he’s on the floor, don’t get me wrong, but I think health is the biggest thing.”

Butler was just about the only Sixer to show up to Saturday’s Game 1 loss, scoring a playoff career-high 36 points (11-of-22 FGs, 13-of-15 FTs) with nine rebounds, two steals, two blocks, and one 3-pointer in 39 minutes. It was his fourth career game of at least 30 points in the playoffs and his first in almost two calendar years.

Tobias Harris scored just four points on 2-of-7 shooting in game 1. Harris entered the postseason on an ice-cold shooting stretch, sitting at 23.3 percent from three over his last 10 games. JJ Redick scored just five points on 2-of-7 shooting with one rebound and one 3-pointer in 23 minutes. He had more fouls (6) than points scored (5). He’s been a perennial playoff underperformer, shooting around 35 percent from deep in each of his last three postseasons.
