Indiana Sports Betting Surges As Hoosier Appetite For Mobile Grows
Robust growth in mobile Indiana sports betting led to the state’s strongest month to date.
IN sports betting handle jumped 60.6% to $147.3 million in November compared to October, led by DraftKings Sportsbook.
DraftKings Sportsbook took $64.1 million in bets last month to keep the top mobile operator spot from October despite FanDuel Sportsbook‘s first full month. FanDuel came in second with $23.7 million in handle.
BetRivers finished with $8.4 million in handle to rank third out of Indiana sports betting’s three mobile operators.
The future is mobile for IN sports betting
Mobile bets accounted for $96.2 million in handle, or 65.3% of Indiana’s total handle last month. That’s up from 52.4% in October but still a bit shy of the more than 80% share found in New Jersey or Pennsylvania.
Those states followed a similar trajectory to what is happening in Indiana. Mobile share grew steadily over the first few months of legal sports betting to reach more than four out of every five wagers today.
Indiana sports betting revenue was $9.3 million, according to the state report.
Illinois, Ohio sports bettors still contributing
Sports betting still isn’t live in Illinois and Chicago-area bettors aren’t holding their breath – or their cash — waiting for it.
Horseshoe Hammond, which sits less than 20 miles from downtown Chicago, again took the top spot for retail handle with $13 million. The Caesars-owned casino is reaping the benefits of NFL season as Illinois remains on the sideline after passing a law to legalize earlier in 2019.
Illinois is expected to accept applications this month.
Elsewhere in the Hoosier State
The Penn National-owned Ameristar East Chicago, which sits farther than Horseshoe Hammond at about 30 miles from downtown Chicago, again ranked third in retail handle with $8 million.
Ameristar, DraftKings Sportsbook’s partner, was the top casino overall for handle.
The Cincinnati market’s appetite for sports betting can still be felt at Penn National’s Hollywood Lawrenceburg. The casino, located a half-hour from downtown Cincinnati, took $8.8 million in retail handle to rank second in the state.
Football, football, and more football
It’s not at all surprising football was the top bet sport. Indiana benefits from the passionate fan bases of the Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts and plenty of colleges.
Bettors placed $57.7 million in bets on football in Indiana last month, up 40.7% from October’s total.
Parlay betting was second with $38.7 million while basketball ranked third at $33.6 million.
Off-track betting facilities help Caesars
Caesars acquired three off-track betting facilities as part of its $1.7 billion purchase of Centaur last year.
Those Winner’s Circle facilities, found in Clarksville, New Haven, and downtown Indianapolis, are doing better individually than some casinos when it comes to IN sports betting handle.
The Indianapolis and Clarksville locations rank fifth and sixth in the state for retail handle.
