As a result, tribal representatives agreed for there to be 10 tribal licenses and 10 pro sports team licenses available for sports betting.

In exchange, the tribal casinos were allowed to expand as desired. Hence, all parties were really pleased with the compromise.

Getting sports betting legalized in Arizona

Even with the tribal casinos on board, there was still a lot of work to do in order to get sports betting legalized in Arizona.

By 2021, the proposed bill was written out, but it faced some resistance. Committee Chair Dave Gowan wanted to pass a rival bill that tribal casinos did not support.

Through the work of Senator T.J. Shoppe, the agreed-upon bill which described the compromise was pass through the committee so that it could be approved. Hence, the Arizona State Senate voted in favor of the new bill on April 12, 2021.

There was a 23-6 margin. Governor Doug Ducey signed the bill into state law just three days later on the 15th.

Per the writing, the goal is to have both retail and online sports betting locations up and running by this fall.

They estimate that the go-live date will be on September 9th, but that estimation may be off by a few days or so. Either way, it seems that all sports betting options in Arizona will be opened by or around football season.
