Kentucky Derby Futures: Early Predictions on 2023 Triple Crown Contenders

One of the most exciting preseason pastimes is placing a wager on a futures pick for the 149th Derby, which will be held on May 6, 2023, at the stunning Churchill Downs racecourse.

Throughout April, BUSR will update you on significant entries and changing odds for potential Derby contenders.

Early Leaders:

Forte

Those who placed first and second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Forte and Cave Rock, presented by TAA, performed well at Keeneland.

Cave Rock set a fast pace early, broke away in the front stretch, and finished more than a second ahead of stablemate National Treasure despite tiring slightly later and lugging in.

Forte received the ideal trip and ride from Irad Ortiz Jr. when he entered the race midway down the far turn and fought back in the middle of the stretch to win by 1 12 lengths and earn 30 Kentucky Derby qualifying points.

Forte demonstrated why he is currently the most advanced racehorse in his age group by winning Grade 1 races in the Hopeful Stakes and the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity, both of which were held on the same track and covered a distance of 1 1/16 miles as the Juvenile.

Except for National Treasure, Cave Rock also entered the race fresh from two consecutive Grade 1 triumphs, the Runhappy Del Mar Futurity and the American Pharoah Stakes. But in the California circuit, those victories were against weaker competition.

Most multiple Grade 1-winning 2-year-olds are often past their peak when the important Kentucky Derby prep races occur in late March and early April, but these two colts seem to have some staying ability.

Arabian Night

A Baffert trainee got everyone’s attention at Keeneland just one day after the BC Juvenile.

This Uncle Mo colt was purchased by Amr Zedan for $2.3 million in April. On Saturday, he romped to victory in the Breeders’ Cup first event, a seven-furlong maiden special weight, won by 7 14 lengths.

He was given 0.76-1 odds when he first began his career. On his way to an incredible victory, he took the lead early, entered the far turn under minor pressure, and stabilized the scenario by the quarter pole.

Arabian Knight’s 102 Equibase Speed Figure in the Juvenile was superior to Forte’s (107) and Cave Rock’s (104) marks.

Despite his impressive maiden victory, this horse is a long shot to win the Kentucky Derby over five and half months from May 6.

Undoubtedly one of the most successful young sires, Uncle Mo has already sired a Kentucky Derby winner. Still, Arabian Knight’s dam’s (mother’s) side genealogy is unimpressive in terms of stamina because all his living closest cousins are sprinters-milers.

Extra Anejo

This son of renowned stud Into Mischief was unquestionably the best 2-year-old victor at Keeneland’s regular October meet.

On October 13, he triumphed in his first-ever particular weight race over the “beard” distance (about seven furlongs) at Keeneland. Tyler Gaffalione rode him to victory, and he earned a 95 Equibase Speed Figure.

Extra Anejo’s owner Winchell Thoroughbreds, invested $1.35 million in him as a yearling. Hall of Fame Steve Asmussen is his trainer.

Extra Anejo fits the requirements as this owner-trainer team consistently produces one or two 3-year-olds who excel on the Triple Crown trail.

Instant Coffee

As a “Prep Season” race in the “Road to the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve” series, Instant Coffee, trained by Brad Cox and owned by Al Gold’s Gold Square LLC, finished first in 1 1/16 miles over a fast track in 1:45.25, earning $238,440 and earning 10 points.

With three victories from three races, Instant Coffee has amassed $322,815. His one shortcoming was a fourth-place finish in the $600,000 Breeders’ Futurity (GI) at Keeneland after his previous start.

Instant Coffee, a Bolt d’Oro son from the Uncle Mo mare Follow No One, was bred at Sagamore Farm in Kentucky. Undoubtedly an excellent choice to stay informed about the forthcoming Kentucky Derby in 2023.
