Tampa Bay Buccaneers
First things first, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers deserve to be the favorites heading into this next season.
Not only because they were able to win Super Bowl 55, but they were also able to resign literally every major free agent on their roster, meaning they are coming back with the exact same team as last year. When you look straight at their offense, it is completely loaded.
With Tom Brady at quarterback, they are instantly in the favorite’s conversation. Now pair him up with Mike Evans, Rob Gronkowski, Chris Godwin and Scotty Miller and you have an offense that can put up points in bunches against basically any team in the league.
They also have a strong one two punch in the backfield with Ronald Jones and Leonard Fournette. This offense could go down as the best in the NFL this upcoming season barring any serious injuries.
But even when you flip over to the defensive side, there isn’t any major weaknesses. They have a great run defense and some of the best linebackers in the game with Lavonte David and Devin White, and their secondary was able to hold up against a few of the best offensive teams last year like the Green Bay Packers and the New Orleans Saints in the postseason.
Kansas City Chiefs
The next team that should be listed as a contender would be the Kansas City Chiefs.
Yes, they came up just short of winning back-to-back Super Bowls last season, but the Buccaneers were ready for them in the rematch. Looking at their roster overall, the Chiefs will be just as dominant as the last few seasons unless something catastrophic happens during the year.
With Patrick Mahomes controlling the offense, there is no stopping this unit, he is able to constantly make plays when there doesn’t seem to be any and it causes so much pressure on opposing defenses.
Now add a generational quarterback like that alongside Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce and Clyde Edwards Helaire and you have talent upon talent.
But unlike some teams in the past, the Chiefs aren’t just built to score points.
Their defense is surprisingly talented overall, but they do need to fill in a few holes during the course of the year. Their defensive line was amazing most of the year, their secondary was inconsistent but most of that was because of their young age and their linebackers were just average at best.
If they are able to get a legitimate playmaker on the defensive end outside of Tyrann Mathieu, I don’t see anybody taking this team down in the postseason, especially because they will be looking for revenge after their embarrassing performance in Super Bowl 55.
Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers also deserve consideration for being a contender even though they did very little over the offseason.
They had made it all the way to the NFC Championship for the second year in a row last year behind the MVP performance of Aaron Rodgers throughout the course of the season.
Rodgers is expected to return for another year to pair alongside Davante Adams, which should make for an explosive offense.
The only problem though is that they lost a few members of their offensive line, while also not signing a new wide receiver that the team badly needs.
To make matters worse, they resigned running back Aaron Jones instead of just allowing AJ Dillon to take over full time at the position. But no matter how confusing or shaky this offseason has been, Rodgers and Adams are good enough to drag them to the postseason.
Their defense may not be the best either, but they were more than capable of holding their own against a number of high powered teams last year and should be able to have some more consistency during his upcoming year.
Cleveland Browns
Lastly, I feel like the Cleveland Browns are going to be official contenders after such a strong outing last year.
After so many losing season and failure for this organization, they were able to stamp their ticket to the postseason last year and actually dominate the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card round.
They did end up losing a tight game against the Chiefs right after, but the game was decided in the final few minutes after Cleveland kept it close and threatened to win for the majority of the time.
They are now bringing back Jarvis Landry, Baker Mayfield, Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt while also getting Odell Beckham Jr. back from his injury that kept him out all last season. This is going to be a deadly offense now that they have some consistency at the head coaching position.
Even their defense could be excellent.
They flashed brilliance at times last year but were just overall inconsistent outside of their edge rusher Myles Garrett.
The team made some nice changes to their secondary and even picked up notable free agent Jadeveon Clowney to pair with Garret, making a stellar pass rush.
Cleveland hasn’t shown the type of consistent success that these other teams have as of late, but I believe they are young and hungry enough to put together a fantastic season.
