Los Angeles Dodgers vs Colorado Rockies – Walk in the Park for Buehler
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Colorado Rockies Prediction and Preview for Thursdays game – 01/04/2021.
The third day of the 2021 MLB Season showcases a fun weekend matchup between the Los Angeles Dodgers taking on the Colorado Rockies. A matchup in which both teams are looking to build early momentum and then some to kickoff the new season.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The LA Dodgers enter the 2021 Season looking to repeat as World Series champions. The Dodgers made significant roster changes by trading away fan favorites Joc Pederson and Kike Hernandez during the offseason, and subsequently signed one of the game’s most dominant starting pitchers in reigning NL Cy Young Award Winner, Trevor Bauer. With the Dodgers signing of Trevor Bauer, Los Angeles is the likely favorite to winning the World Series title this year.
Colorado Rockies
The Colorado Rockies started the truncated 2020 Season red hot with an 11-3 record. Though, mid-season inconsistency on both sides of the field hampered Colorado’s progress as the Rockies wound up losing 31 of their remaining 46 games to finish with a 26-34 record, ultimately missing out on a National League playoff berth.
The Rockies then traded All-Star third baseman, Nolan Arenado, to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for Austin Gomber and added a few other position players in their bid to compete in the postseason in October.
Verdict: Dodgers Cruise Past Rockies
For this game, we pick out which team will end victorious up on Day 3 of MLB action. We pick the Los Angeles Dodgers to edge past Colorado in this matchup.
It’s worth noting that the Dodgers are one of the Major League’s deepest teams, because of the balance of depth and talent that they have up and down their lineup.
[su_panel color=”#131518″ border=”7px solid #3151a2″]Although it is still early days, we can assure that this year’s Dodgers are a far better team than its championship predecessor. And this is something the Rockies and the rest of MLB will need to keep an eye on if they want to keep pace with the defending champs this season.[/su_panel]Predicted Final Score: LAD 7 – COL 3
X-Factor: Seager in World Series MVP Form
Corey Seager was the biggest reason the LA Dodgers ended up hoisting the Commissioner’s Trophy in 2020. Seager was practically in the zone behind home plate all-season long especially with runners on-base.
Seager effectively made good use of his patience, plate discipline, and aggression to induce big home runs in those key situations to put the Dodgers in front during various stages of the 2020 MLB Postseason. A formula Seager will employ for most of the season, and in this case, against the Colorado Rockies.
[su_panel color=”#131518″ border=”7px solid #3151a2″]Judging by his statline throughout Spring Training, Seager elevated his offensive game to another level, hitting 8 homers, driving home 16 runs-batted-in, and a 0.346 batting average. And these figures suggest that Seager is in for a huge year, where he’s projected to rack up more than 30 home runs, 100 RBIs, and a 0.300 batting average serving as a basis of what could potentially be an MVP-type season for the All-Star shortstop.[/su_panel]GAME ANALYSIS
Walk in the Park for Buehler
Walker Buehler has emerged himself as one of MLB’s most consistent and dependable starting pitchers. The 26-year-old righty was constantly putting up strikeouts and zeros on the board to keep batters held in check in 5 starts during the 2020 MLB Postseason. And as a result, Buehler posted a perfect 2-0 record with a 1.80 earned run average, 39 strikeouts, and a Walks + Hits / Innings ratio of 1.20.
Buehler shows a lot of upside as a bonafide ace where he can shut down any opposing team’s batting order on any given night with an array of pitches. Buehler’s pitch arsenal ranges from fastballs, sinkers, cutters, and other off-speed pitches to get himself ahead of the pitch count.
Dodgers Roughing Up Rockies Pitching
Pitching has been the biggest letdown for the 2020 Colorado Rockies. The Rockies had one of the worst pitching staffs in the Majors Leagues owing mostly to a dreadful 5.59 team ERA. Some of those had been a by-product of bad luck, them throwing pitches outside the strike zone, or them not getting any key defensive outs which is the one area the Rockies need to improve on in 2021.
For the Dodgers, they are very methodical with how they approach opposing pitchers while grinding out at-bats. They have a great feel of when to swing at good pitches in order to drive in runs due to their good batting IQ and plate discipline. And this is the kind of philosophy the Dodgers were able to demonstrate as they wound hitting a solid 0.255 average as a team altogether.
[su_panel color=”#131518″ border=”7px solid #3151a2″]The Rockies will need to come up with a good game plan to shut down guys like Seager, Mookie Betts, and Cody Bellinger if that were to be the case. And Colorado has Jon Gray to match up against Walker Buehler. Last season, Gray had his season cut short due to injury where he finished an abysmal 2-4 record with an ERA of 6.69 and is looking for a strong bounce back season.[/su_panel]If Jon Gray can somehow match Buehler pitch for pitch, Gray should be able to shut down LA’s offense to keep his team in it while his teammates are giving some valuable run support to pull off an upset.
