Why Bet on San Antonio?

The Spurs were 101-96 upset winners in Game 1 Saturday. DeMar DeRozan double-doubled against the Nuggets, scoring 18 points (6-of-17 FGs, 6-of-8 FTs) with 12 rebounds, six assists, one block and four turnovers in 39 minutes. DeRozan became the first Spur to notch a double-double in his first playoff game with the team since Nazr Mohammed did it in 2005. The 12 boards mark a new playoff-high for DeRozan, whose previous high was 11.

LaMarcus Aldridge struggled in Game 1, making just 6-of-19 shots (3-of-4 FTs) for 15 points to go with eight rebounds, one assist and one steal in 34 minutes against the Nuggets. There was a scary moment when he came down on the foot of Paul Millsap after taking a jumper and turned his ankle, but he ultimately came away unscathed.

Rudy Gay scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting on Saturday, adding six rebounds, one assist, one steal, and two 3-pointers in 27 minutes. Gay came off the bench behind Jakob Poeltl in Game 1 but ended up seeing three more minutes of playing time.

Derrick White scored 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting (2-of-3 FTs) with three rebounds, five assists, one steal and four turnovers in 28 minutes in the opener. White’s playoff debut went very well. He also played suffocating defense on Jamal Murray, holding him to 8-of-24 shooting.

San Antonio has won 6-of-7 playoff series between the two teams and holds a 21-6 postseason record against Denver. San Antonio holds the most playoff road wins in the last 21 years with their 67 victories away from home court. The Los Angeles Lakers are in second place with 47, followed by the Miami Heat with 39.

Why Bet on Denver?

Mike Malone said before Game 1 that one thing this team was missing was closer. But he said Nikola Jokic stepped up into that role this season, hitting game-winning shots. With Denver down 97-96 in the final minute of the playoff opener, Jokic turned the ball over on a drive.

And with 13.3 seconds left, still down one, the Nuggets turned to Jamal Murray, who missed a jumper. Murray had airballed a jumper a few moments earlier as well. And then down three, Murray lost the ball near halfcourt bringing it up as Denver wouldn’t get a shot at tying the game late. Closing in the regular season is much different than closing in a postseason game.

Jokic posted a triple-double on Saturday in the loss scoring 10 points (4-of-9 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs) with 14 rebounds, 14 assists, one steal and three turnovers in 36 minutes. Jokic became just the fourth player in NBA history to triple-double in his playoff debut and the first since LeBron James.

Murray struggled in his playoff debut, making just 8-of-24 shots (1-of-1 FTs) for 17 points with two rebounds and a career-high six steals in 34 minutes. He failed to make at least one 3-pointer in just 12 of his 74 regular season games, which shows how rare it is for him to have such an off night from deep.

Will Barton double-doubled in Saturday’s Game 1 in scoring 15 points (6-of-15 FGs, 2-of-4 FTs) with 10 rebounds, one assist, two blocks, and one 3-pointer in 32 minutes of action. It was Barton’s first career playoff double-double. Gary Harris scored a team-high 20 points (7-of-12 FGs, 5-of-5 FTs) against the Spurs. His defense helped hold DeMar DeRozan to just 6-of-17 shooting, which kept Denver in the game.

The Nuggets are in playoffs for the first time since 2013, marking six years since their last playoff appearance and twice as long since Denver and San Antonio last met in the first round of the 2007 playoffs, which they lost 4-1.
