40 Percent Of PA Sports Betting Took Place Online In First Full Month After Launch

What a difference having online sports betting makes.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board reported that more than 40% of money wagered in the state in June came via sportsbook apps and websites.

And that happened with just one sportsbook app open all month — SugarHouse Sportsbook in PA — and two others (Parx and BetRivers) only open for about a week.

A new record for PA sports betting

With the launch of PA online sports betting, the state set a new record for handle at more than $46.3 million. The best month to date had been March at $44.5 million, per PGCB numbers.

But those numbers come with a stark difference in the sports calendar. While March is one of the biggest months for betting — think college basketball and March Madness betting — June certainly is not. While the NBA Finals did take place, it's one of the deader months on the calendar in terms of things to bet on.

The state's sportsbook operators generated $3.1 million in revenue for the month, as well.

And the online vs. retail breakdown

The appetite for betting online in Pennsylvania became clear very quickly.

For June, $27 million came from the eight physical sportsbooks that were already operational in PA. Online betting clocked in at $19.3 million in wagers, and again, that came with an extremely limited rollout.

In neighboring New Jersey, online and mobile betting accounts for more than 80% of sports betting handle. By the end of this year or next, we should see a similar split in Pennsylvania.

It's SugarHouse and everyone else…

SugarHouse, which went live with online sports betting at the very end of May, was not shockingly the leader for handle and revenue in May.

Half of the money wagered in PA — $23.3 million — came at a SugarHouse sportsbook, either online or in person. Of that, $18.2 million came online.

SugarHouse's sister property in Pittsburgh — Rivers Casino — had a pretty good month as well. With just a week of online betting, it generated more than $800,000 in handle. Its retail sportsbook was the biggest in the state in terms of money wagered for June, with more than $7 million.
