March Madness Sweet 16 Odds: Thursday Betting Preview – Sports Betting Odds, Lines, News and Articles
A pair of close clashes between two-seeds and three-seeds dominate the Sweet Sixteen schedule on Thursday, starting with the Tennessee Volunteers taking on Purdue in the South Region as 2-point favorites on the March Madness betting odds.
No. 2 Tennessee was less than dominant while failing to cover in opening weekend victories over No. 15 Colgate and No. 10 Iowa, and has tallied just four straight-up wins in six overall contests ahead of Thursday’s game at KFC Yum! Center.
The Volunteers have also been a steady disappointment to bettors, covering in just four of 13 outings, and lag well behind the favorites to claim this year’s national championship as a +600 wager on the NCAA Tournament odds.
Conversely, No. 3 Purdue has impressed in a pair of tournament victories, capped by an 87-61 rout of the defending national champion Villanova Wildcats as 3.5-point chalk in second-round action, and has posted SU wins in 16 of 19 contests.
History does not favor the Boilermakers, who have failed to earn the win in six Sweet Sixteen appearances since 1998. However, Purdue is a solid 4-2 SU against nationally ranked squads, and has emerged as a +375 wager to come out of the South at the tournament.
In Thursday’s other battle between a two-seed and a three-seed, the Michigan Wolverines look to continue their drive towards a second straight appearance in the national championship game as they take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders as 2-point chalk.
Michigan Defense Leads to SU, ATS Win
No. 2 Michigan’s stifling defense, which ranked second in the nation this season, was in top form in the team’s 64-49 win over No. 10 Florida as a 5.5-point favorite in West Region second-round action.
The Wolverines have now won eight of 11 SU with all three of those defeats coming against arch rival Michigan State, and closely edge out the Volunteers on the national championship odds as a +1500 bet.
No. 3 Texas Tech also dominated on defense this season, lagging behind only Virginia and Michigan while surrendering just 59.2 points per game. The Red Raiders have carried over their shutdown defence into the opening weekend of the Big Dance, and positioned themselves for a return trip to the Elite Eight with a crushing 78-58 rout of No. 6 Buffalo as 4-point chalk on Sunday.
Texas Tech also trails only the Boilermakers among No. 3 seeds, with +400 odds on the March Madness lines to advance to the Final Four for the first time in program history.
Elsewhere on the March Madness odds on Thursday night, the Gonzaga Bulldogs, top seeds in the West Region, will be looking to top 80 points for the seventh time in nine outings as they take on No. 4 Florida State as 7-point favorites.
The Bulldogs have averaged 85 points per game at this year’s tournament but have produced uneven results on the college basketball odds, covering in just four of their past 10 outings.
Thursday’s late game has the No. 12 Oregon Ducks battling No. 1 Virginia as 8.5-point underdogs on the March Madness odds in South Region action. The Ducks have won and covered in 10 straight including outright wins in two outings as betting underdogs.
