Deontay Wilder vs Tyson Fury: Odds and Predictions
- Two heavyweight giants meet on December 1, 2018 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles
- Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury are both undefeated and regarded to be two of the best heavyweights of their generation
- Is Fury ready for such a dangerous fight, and can Wilder take his game to the next level?
This is one of the most interesting match-ups available in the sport of boxing. Deontay Wilder (40-0, 39 KOs) and Tyson Fury (27-0, 19 KOs), both undefeated heavyweights, meet this Saturday, December 1st for one of the most anticipated fights of 2018. Wilder puts his WBC title on the line against the former lineal champ.
It’s a brilliant stylistic match-up, with both fighters possessing both undeniable strengths and glaring weaknesses. Wilder has knocked out every opponent he’s ever faced, but lacks technique and finesse. Fury was once the heavyweight king, but he’s still finding his footing after a long and tumultuous lay-off.

We already know the game plan for both fighters. Wilder will spend the entire fight setting up a straight right, knowing that he can knock out anyone on the planet with a clean shot. Fury will stick and move, using his unorthodox movement to hopefully baffle his opponent. Wilder will want to stand and trade while Fury will try to make things awkward.
We know exactly what Wilder is capable of and he silenced a lot of his critics after his last win against Luis Ortiz. Say what you will about his technique but you can’t deny his results. He’s amassed an undefeated 40-0 record and has successfully defended his heavyweight strap seven times.
On the other hand, we currently don’t know what Fury is capable of. The former world champion soared to the very top of heavyweight boxing in 2015 when he shocked the world by dethroning Wladimir Klitschko. But a long spell of depression and drug abuse forced him to vacate his newly-acquired titles and leave the sport.

Now the Gypsy King is back and ready to reclaim what was once his. But his two comeback fights have been against no-name opponents, and Fury appeared clumsy and rusty in both fights. He’s picked a fight with the biggest puncher on the planet and many suspect he’s not quite up to it yet.
If this were the Fury of 2015, he would undoubtedly be the betting favorite. His style is kryptonite to pure punchers like Wilder because his wily movement makes him so difficult to hit. Fury is essentially a seven-foot behemoth with the speed of a welterweight. At his best, he would frustrate Wilder for 12 rounds and cruise to an easy decision victory.
That’s essentially what this fight comes down to. If Fury is back to his former self, as he says he is, then this fight is his for the taking. He’ll use his speed and technique to run rings around Wilder. But there’s a good chance 2 Fast still has a bit of rust to shake off. He looks like his former self when it comes to his weight and physique, but in the ring he was pretty sloppy.
I predict another classic Wilder fight. The Bronze Bomber will be down on the scorecards after the first few rounds, but none of that will matter because he’ll connect with a devastating right hand and stop the show.
Pick: Deontay Wilder (-170)
