CFL and Grey Cup Odds 2019 – Early Preview with Predictions
It’s going to be a minute before the CFL is truly relevant again this year.
There was a minor blip on the radar, though, as Montreal quarterback Johnny Manziel apparently forced his way out of the league and put the Canadian Football League on the map.
He’s now in the AAF, and it’s probably a divorce that’s good for all parties involved. I’m not sure he would have made the Alouettes a whole lot better going into the 2019 CFL season, but after posting a paltry 5-13 record in the league in 2018, I struggle to see how they can get much worse.
Reflecting on how last year went down is one thing to do as bettors prepare for a new CFL campaign. You won’t want to bet on Montreal (or probably Toronto, either) to win it all, but after that, it’s actually fairly wide open.
There is something to be said about a league with parity like that. Then again, the Calgary Stampeders made it to the Grey Cup in each of the last three seasons. If history holds true, the odds are pretty great they’ll do it again.
Calgary at least finally finished what they started in 2018, though. The Stampeders took out the Ottawa Redblacks to steal the Grey Cup, securing their second CFL championship in the last five years (8th all-time).
Whether or not Calgary can get to the Grey Cup for an insane fourth consecutive season is one question. Betting on them to repeat as champions is another.
The 2019 CFL season doesn’t really get started until this summer, but with Manziel’s departure, now feels like a fine time to take a look at the latest CFL odds and see which teams are worth betting on.
2019 Grey Cup Odds
Calgary returns as the favorite to win the 2019 Grey Cup, and I doubt many would disagree with the logic behind it.
The Stampeders had the best record in the CFL a year ago, are coming off the title and three straight championship appearances, and Bo Levi Mitchell heads one of the best offenses in Canada.
There are just two questions: which football betting sites offer the best price for backing Calgary and what other teams could be worth your time.
To help with the first issue, here’s a list of Grey Cup odds at the top CFL sportsbooks you’ll come across online. From there, I’ll take a look at Calgary’s top competition for a repeat title and some value elsewhere in the league.
Top Grey Cup Favorites
Calgary is obviously the #1 threat to the title. Not much has changed for them since last season, and while it’s never easy to get to the Grey Cup (let alone win), their price tag to do so is pretty tempting.
They are not the only team capable of running the table once the CFL playoffs begin, however.
Winnipeg still stands out as a viable contender based simply on their offense alone. The Blue Bombers paced the CFL with 550 points in 2018 but just couldn’t get to the promised land. They’ll be trying to break that trend for the first time since 2011.
The BC Lions are also a good bet to move from pedestrian to elite. They brought back star passer Mike Reilly this offseason and are big-time threats in the eyes of many, while Ottawa is a real threat after reaching the promised land three times in the last four years.
Best Grey Cup Sleepers
Everyone else kind of blends together from there, but it’s foolish to write off Saskatchewan (12-6 last year). The Roughriders were a solid playoff team a year ago and have Tre Mason leading the charge on the ground (5.06 yards per carry in 2018).
Saskatchewan will need to show they can be a bit more consistent on offense, but everyone knows they can defend and run the ball. If the Roughriders can figure the quarterback position out, they could really be a threat for a title run.
With Edmonton possibly taking a step back, the other sleeper I’d have my eye on is Hamilton. The Tiger-Cats pieced together a pretty great offense under dual-threat quarterback Jeremiah Masoli’s direction, and given his progress as a starter in the CFL, the future looks very bright.
The Tiger-Cats fended off the Johnny Manziel circus and pushed their way into the 2018 CFL playoffs, taking that natural first step in the right direction. If they can iron out some wrinkles defensively, Hamilton could really climb the ladder in 2019.
Who Will Win the 2019 Grey Cup?
There is still a lot of time until the 2019 CFL season rolls around, and there’s also quite a bit to digest.
Of everything that’s changing, the biggest news that could eventually send shockwaves through the league is superstar passer Mike Reilly moving from Edmonton to British Columbia.
Reilly is 34 years old, but he’s coming off of three consecutive 5,000+ yard passing seasons. The guy is literally in his prime CFL years and helped Edmonton put up a solid 482 points last year.
I’ll be the first to admit that Reilly alone doesn’t automatically lift the Lions to title contention, but BC was at least competitive in 2018, and their offense was what held them back.
Reilly has championship experience after securing a Grey Cup title back in 2015, and he’s “coming home” so to speak to try to do the same thing with the Lions. He and BC are a fun value bet at Bovada (+700).
If you’re looking for upside, I also don’t mind Hamilton (+900 at Bovada) just because they are loaded offensively and could be trending in the right direction as a whole.
I don’t see much of a reason to go against Calgary, though. You’re actually still getting pretty good value for the defending champion (+325 at Bovada), and they’ve been getting to the final CFL game of the year with absurd regularity.
There could be a dynasty brewing here, so until Calgary gives us a real reason to look elsewhere, I’m taking their +325 Grey Cup odds and running.
