Chargers vs Lions 2019 NFL Week 2 Odds, Preview & Prediction
The Los Angeles Chargers look for a 2-0 start as they travel to the Motor City on Sunday, while the Lions somehow blew a game they had in the bag last week vs. Arizona and try to avoid a 0-1-1 beginning. The Bolts are short favorites on the NFL Odds.

In 2015, the Chargers were still in San Diego when they opened the season with a 33-28 home win over Detroit. Down 21-3 less than halfway through the second quarter, Philip Rivers helped rally the Chargers to 30 straight points. Rivers overcame two interceptions, including a 31-yard return for a touchdown by Glover Quin, to complete 35 of 42 passes for 404 yards and two touchdowns.
The go-ahead touchdown came on Rivers’ 13-yard pass to tight end Ladarius Green early in the fourth quarter. Matthew Stafford was 19 of 30 for 246 yards and two touchdowns, with two interceptions for the Lions. The Chargers lead the all-time series 7-4.

Why Bet on LA Chargers?
Without Pro Bowl holdout running back Melvin Gordon, the Bolts were 30-24 overtime winners against the Colts in Week 1. Austin Ekeler, Gordon’s primary replacement, rushed 12 times for 58 yards and one touchdown, adding 96 yards and two touchdowns on six catches as a pass-catcher. Ekeler’s seven targets were second on the team to Keenan Allen’s 10, and with the Chargers’ offensive line in its current state, Philip Rivers constantly was looking to Ekeler on dump-offs to avoid the pressure.
It was Ekeler’s second career multi-TD game but the first in which he had a rushing and receiving score. Ekeler became is the first undrafted player since Dan Reeves in 1967 to have at least 150 scrimmage yards, two receiving TDs and a rushing touchdown in a game. Ekeler was the first Charger to total at least 150 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns in a season opener. Finally, Ekeler gained 108 yards after the catch Sunday. His 10.4 yards per reception in 2018 led all running backs.
Philip Rivers completed 25-of-34 passes for 333 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Rivers’ first score was a short dump-off to Ekeler at the goal line, the second a jump ball to Keenan Allen from 28 yards out, and the third a 55-yard catch-and-run by Ekeler again. Allen caught 8-of-10 targets for 123 yards and the one touchdown.
Kicker Michael Badgley missed the game with a groin injury but may return this week. Chargers cornerback Michael Davis is expected to miss some time after a hamstring injury sustained vs. the Colts, coach Anthony Lynn said. The injury came early in the first quarter. Davis only played five snaps before being pulled from the contest and was then replaced by CB Brandon Facyson. Fellow CB Trevor Williams remains out with a quadricep injury.

Why Bet on Detroit?
The Lions had no right not winning last week, blowing a 24-6 fourth-quarter lead and tying at Arizona. Rookie tight end TJ Hockenson’s touchdown, on the second play of the fourth quarter, put the Lions up those 18 points, seemingly putting the game out of reach for a Cardinals team that had struggled to move the ball to that point. Alas, the Lions couldn’t hold out. Defiant coach Matt Patricia declared the Lions “definitely didn’t back off” in the late collapse.
“We definitely didn’t back off from a standpoint of play calls or anything like that, not at all,” Patricia emphatically stated. “We know how dangerous (Kyler Murray) is. He’s obviously a great player, was a great college player and finished off the game really well.”
Murray, who had not had a quarter completing more than 50 percent of his passes for the first 45 minutes, completed 15 of 19 passes in the fourth quarter and threw two touchdowns. Lions OC Darrell Bevell said “we can put ourselves in better situations” when asked about the play call after the timeout on a critical third down in the fourth quarter that could have put Detroit in good position to win.
In his first game, Detroit’s first-rounder Hockenson caught six passes for 131 yards and that touchdown — the most receiving yards since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger for a rookie tight end in his debut. He led Detroit in yards Sunday and — surprisingly considering the Lions have two of the better deep-ball receivers in the league in Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay — yards per reception (21.8).
Matthew Stafford completed 27-of-45 passes for 385 yards and three touchdowns but almost had a crushing interception late in overtime. His 385 yards were 38 more than he managed in any 2018 start. Stafford couldn’t make a play when it mattered most late in the fourth quarter and overtime. Danny Amendola caught 7-of-13 targets for 104 yards and a touchdown. He also made a silly decision to stay in bounds on a late overtime grab, costing the Lions essential time.
Kerryon Johnson rushed 16 times for 49 yards and had two receptions for 13 additional yards.
