2019 NFL Preseason Week 3 Odds, Overview & Picks
The Oakland Raiders have already tired of Antonio Brown’s act and he hasn’t even played in a game yet. Brown skipped yet another workout over the weekend as we are back to helmet issues, which is patently ridiculous. New Raiders GM Mike Mayock clearly is fed up, saying of Brown’s absence: “He’s upset about the helmet issue. We have supported that, we appreciate that.
OK? But at this point, we’ve pretty much exhausted all avenues of relief. So from our perspective, it’s time for him to be all-in or all-out.” Here’s a look at two intriguing preseason matchups this week. Check back for MyBookie NFL Preseason Week 3 Odds. We will also have individual game previews this week.
2019 NFL Preseason Week 3 Odds, Overview & Picks
Baltimore Ravens at Philadelphia Eagles
The Ravens are just crazy good in the preseason under coach John Harbaugh. The team won its 15th straight exhibition game last week, 26-13 over Green Bay. Starting Baltimore QB Lamar Jackson, the 2016 Heisman Trophy winner, played two possessions, both of which ended with field goals. He completed 6 of 10 passes for 58 yards and ran twice for 14 yards.
Rookie first-round receiver Marquise Brown didn’t play. Brown is trying to play through a Lisfranc injury he’s only six months removed from. He looks on track for Week 1 of the regular season but probably won’t go at all this preseason. The Ravens already have been dealt a major injury blow as cornerback Tavon Young could miss the entire season with a neck injury. The Ravens made 25-year-old Young the highest-paid nickel back in the league in February. Young missed all of 2017 with a torn ACL and sat out the Ravens’ Wild Card loss to the Chargers with a hernia.
A fourth-round pick in 2016, Young stepped up as a difference-maker last season. He scored two touchdowns off fumble recoveries, becoming one of four players to score multiple defensive touchdowns in 2018. His 62-yard touchdown sealed a 22-10 upset of the Chargers in Week 16. Harbaugh said there is an “outside chance” that doctors will consider seeing if Young’s injury will heal without surgery.
The Eagles have lost two backup quarterbacks to injuries already so they lured Josh McCown out of retirement. McCown, 40, was planning to be an ESPN analyst this season. Philadelphia will be McCown’s 11th NFL team and first NFC East team. He spent the past two seasons with the New York Jets, going 5-11 as a starter while throwing 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions overall.
He was needed when projected backup Cody Kessler suffered a concussion in last Thursday’s preseason game vs. the Jaguars. Kessler was the Eagles’ fill-in backup while Nate Sudfeld rehabs a wrist injury. Philly beat Jacksonville 24-10 to improve to 1-1 this preseason.
New Orleans Saints at NY Jets
The Jets already have been hit with a major injury as starting linebacker tore his ACL in the team’s preseason game last week against Atlanta. At the time of his injury, the second quarter was nearly over and Williamson was the only defensive starter left in the game. Williamson, the team’s defensive play-caller, was credited with a team-high 121 tackles last season while earning Pro Football Focus’ No. 8 run-stopping grade among inside linebackers. Coach Adam Gase admitted he messed up by leaving Williamson in there. With Williamson on the shelf, rookie fifth-round pick Blake Cashman will slide into the starting lineup next to C.J. Mosley.
Meanwhile, star running back Le’Veon Bell apparently won’t play at all this preseason. The season-ending injury to Williamson convinced Gase to sit Bell for good before the Jets take on the Buffalo Bills in Week 1. Bell, who will have gone more than 600 days between games by then, said last week he was on board with playing in the preseason but also prepared to be held out. Starting right guard Brian Winters (shoulder) will be held out of practice this week and thus won’t play in this one.
The Jets are 1-1 this preseason following a 22-10 win in Atlanta. Second-year Jets QB Sam Darnold completed 5 of 7 passes for 46 yards. He guided New York on a 66-yard touchdown drive to start the game, capped by Ty Montgomery’s 1-yard scoring run. New York’s Taylor Bertolet, who was signed last weekend after Chandler Catanzaro missed two extra points in the preseason opener and surprisingly retired, botched a pair of PATs to raise more concerns.
The Saints improved to 1-1 this preseason with a 19-17 win. Third-string QB Taysom Hill had 191 yards of offense and directed three second-half scoring drives. Hill directed an 11-play, 69-yard drive midway through the fourth quarter that culminated in a 1-yard TD pass to Devine Ozigbo. The Saints went for 2, but Hill was sacked by Anthony Lanier II. Following a Chargers punt, Hill drove the Saints into field goal range, where Will Lutz made a 28-yarder with 1:08 remaining.
Coach Sean Payton revealed after Sunday’s game that backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was sick and that he thought about taking him out of the game a little earlier — but the Saints only had two QBs available since they wanted to keep Drew Brees sidelined. Payton also stressed that Bridgewater “didn’t get a lot of help” while the Saints offense struggled in the first half.
