  1. Can we please keep him? As a lifelong Tennessee fan I would like something good to happen in this decade. I just want one sport where we’re good, is that to much to ask?

  2. Prior to his long stint at Texas, Barnes hopped around a lot. After a year or two at PC, Barnes was going to accept the job at UVa. Rumor has it that Dave Gavitt sat him down and told him that he was staying put….

I hope Barnes stays at Tennessee and finishes his career there.

  3. This would be an extremely odd move to me.

It sounds like he basically gave up at Texas. Too much booster money, too many larger than life recruits who wouldn’t listen to him and need constant babysitting, completely unrealistic expectations….

In this context, his return to greatness at TN makes sense.

But circling backing to the reasons he left Texas, UCLA is probably the one school where he would have to deal with more of the blatant extra curricular stuff than he did at Texas.

    Very strange.

  4. I’m glad ucla is turning their search into a clusterF. As a Trojan, I don’t have much to bring me happiness anywhere in cfb or cbb.

As a neutral-ish fan, I don’t think Barnes would take the ucla job. He has it made in Tennessee right now, and this feels like a grass-isn’t-greener situation.

I’m surprised ucla isn’t looking at NBA assts or ex-NBA coaches like Kidd, L Walton…

  5. Sorry but Barnes isn’t that good – UCLA is just beyond desperate.

He doesn’t deserve anything close to a lifetime contract and the Vols shouldn’t feel forced to give him one just because another school is dumb enough to throw a ton of money at him.

If Barnes were to leave, which I highly doubt he does, the Vols could get Forbes who is 10 years younger and could probably do just as well or even better than Barnes. If I were a Vols fan and at the end of this wind up with the much younger and cheaper Forbes, I’d be more than happy.

  6. This is weak from UCLA. It shows they aren’t committed to being a top basketball program. If I was in charge of hiring UCLA next HC, I’d give the winning coach of the National championship game the keys to a fully stocked brinks truck, and have the contract in hand.

Don’t fucking settle for mediocrity if the letters U, C, L and A are across the chest. Hiring Barnes would be no better than keeping Alford.

  7. If he takes the UCLA job you can knock off about $600,000 in state income taxes right of the bat. After taking into account cost of living adjustments then i dont think it will be that huge of a pay increase to be honest with you. Im sure he has talked to his accountant about all this jazz.

If the offer is $4mil or more he’d be better staying at TN. Im sure the boosters wouldnt have a problem covering the difference.

I dont know about his personal life and how much his wife likes it in Tenn but the dude is from North Carolina and knows the southern way.

I bet he stays. Unless he has some major issues with the athletic department or he just dislikes the area. I personally couldnt live in LA but i also dont have a $5mil job lined up. I could get deal with the millions of folks for that amount of money.
